'World-class against world-class: a very special
Merlot tasting'
24 excellent Merlots and one Chilean
wine were tasted against the Petrus 2000 that costs nearly Sfr 3 000
(nearly R15,000 a bottle).
'The dance around Petrus' was the
title of this special tasting that was held in Zürich to which 12
professional tasters and winewriters from Germany, France, Austria
and Switzerland were invited.
Among the wines competing was,
for instance, the 2001 Paloma of Jim Richard from Napa Valley in
California that was rated number 1 on the Wine Spectators 'Top
100' wines in 2003, and Redigaffi 2000, the cult wine from
Tuscany to which Robert Parker gave 100 points.
Apart from
these the list included some of the best Bordeaux wines: La
Mondotte, L'Eglise-Clinet, Rol Valentin, and Chateau Petrus.
California's Duckhorn Vineyards 2000 was in the line up, as well as
the Gran Reserva 2002 of Vina Tarapaca from Chile.
'The
exercise was not to prove that, for the price of one Petrus, we
could buy quite a few other wines, but more to open a bottle of
Petrus and taste it with the worlds best.'
